Fair Trials… Fundamental Human Right for a just and strong society……. In every word I spread on fair trials and Court Monitoring, I advocate for the person’s right for justice.
I was honored to train in this workshop that highlighted the basics of how to be a trial monitor. It gathered all the relevant international standards on what constitutes a fair trial. The training workshop aimed to raise the awareness of legal practitioners, human rights defenders, lawyers, activists, and journalists to know the international standards of Fair Trials, compare them with the Tunisian national laws, and identify the challenges in Tunisia.
The training was conducted by the Human Rights center at the American Bar Association and ABA Rule of Law Initiative-ROLI).It took place in Tunisia, March 2019.
The training contents were customized with the Tunisian context, and were based on the international, regional, and national legislative framework in which courts operate, especially International Covenant for Civil and political Rights- ICCPR, Arab Charter, the new Tunisian Constitution, adopted on January 26, 2014, along with the revised Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) passed in 2016 that guarantees broad due process and fair treatment rights for detainees and prisoners.
During the workshop, a court’s visit was conducted with the participants to the court in Tunis, to observe court proceedings, gather information on the trials, and analyze legal practices.
I envision that participants with this training will be able to demonstrate support for human rights defenders, advance accountability for human rights violations and contribute more broadly to the strengthening of judicial systems.
