Convened by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and Arab Region, I participated as an expert in the Regional Round table on the fourth phase of the World Program for Human Rights Education
“Prospects for Working with Youth on Human Rights in the Arab Region: Opportunities and Challenges”
The round table included 10 experts from the MENA region in human rights education, whether official or unofficial, from national human rights institutions and non-governmental organizations working to share their experiences and information they have on human rights education in their institutions and countries in order to enrich the discussion on the followings:
- Explore the fourth phase of the global program for educating young people in the field of human rights in formal and non-formal education institutions.
- Shed light on the challenges of educating youth on equality, human rights, non-discrimination, rule of law and respect for diversity.
- Exchange of best practices and efforts made to spread a culture of human rights among youth in the Arab region
- Present proposals and plans for human rights education that can be used in the development of plans and programs for Arab countries in the field of human rights education for young people.
The meeting was very useful for a better understanding of the role of educational institutions to implement the fourth phase of human rights global program, provide practical solutions to overcome the challenges facing youth and impede their education in the field of human rights in the Arab region, participation and exchange of best practices, experiences and efforts made to educate youth in the field of human rights in the Arab region, and envision a number of initiatives or programs that could be implemented within the framework of the fourth phase of the World Program for Human Rights Education.
