Political participation for women is a Right is not a gift

Political participation is essential to achieve gender equality and female empowerment.

Political positions are viewed as inaccessible to women and the community is viewed as unresponsive to their concerns.

25 women from the Basra region gathered for six hours a day for five training days and were crowded with full energy and ambition. I was honored to have the opportunity in sharing this true experience with women who are willing to run for elections in times where the world is still largely absent from national and local women participation in decision-making bodies; The workshop aimed also to create a strong platform for women in Iraq in support of their careers and actively participate in all political areas. The workshop discussed the Women, Peace and Security agenda and linked it to the sustainable development agenda.

This workshop enables Iraqi women from advancing their participation in the political sphere and in the development of the country. It discusses also major gaps and challenges faced by women, and the foundations for gender equality and equity and the empowerment of women, progress in the implementation of the sustainable development agenda and its linkage to resolution 1325.

The training focused on addressing the right of women to participate in political processes. It was customized to the region in Iraq and addressed the countless challenges in which women face ranging from discrimination and violence to a lack of support and resources.

The training empowered was based on building the skills capacities and leadership for women in civil society members, activists, women’s organizations, and female journalists to enable them to participate fully in the political and economic life of their societies.

In our concept of participation in decision-making, there is a different will that creates change and enables women to play their role based on full citizenship.

The workshop was characterized by female visual elites with different scientific and practical specializations.

The workshop discussed the most prominent obstacles to the political participation of women, whether related to constitutional, legal and cultural factors that perpetuate stereotypical images of women and their role in societies in addition to economic reasons.

Participants emphasized the need for party leaders to provide training and development requirements for women cadres within those parties, which increases the possibility of women participating in leadership positions at work and in decision-making. Participants were recommended to emphasize the importance of the role of women in peacemaking, reconciliation, negotiation and conflict resolution processes.

The course had a special flavor of creativity and life skills.
