At the Memorial of Dr. Amin Mekki Madani, we endeavored to spread the values of Dr. Amin Makki whose life was shaped by the pursuit of human rights, the just work of addressing injustices, and the lifetime spent by the tireless effort. To this end, we launched a regional annual workshop that aims to spread awareness on the culture of human rights by enriching the awareness of the international, regional, and national protective human rights mechanisms.
In September 2020, I had the pleasure to deliver training for 27 human rights defenders and activists from 15 different countries in the MENA region. The first regional annual training workshop was organized by Geneva Institute for Human Rights, UN Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and Arab Region, High Commissioner for Human Rights- Sudan Office.
Dr. Amin Mekki Medani (1939-2018) was a prominent lawyer and human rights, defender. He was the president of the Confederation of Sudanese Civil Society, Vice President of Civil Society Initiative, and former President of the Sudan Human Rights Monitor (SHRM). He served as head of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) office in the West Bank and Gaza, Chief of Mission of the OHCHR in Zagreb, Croatia, legal advisor to the Special Representative of the U.N Secretary-General in Iraq as well as Afghanistan, and a Regional Representative for the OHCHR in Beirut, Lebanon.
